Cherries

Cherries, known in Flemish as poepkes, are red hard gums with a morello cherry flavour, whose local nickname refers plainly to their shape. That kind of name is typical of Flemish sweet culture, where sweets have for generations been named after what they look like. The cherry flavour is full and lightly tart, and because the gum is firm it is released slowly. Poepkes are one of those products customers ask for with a smile, which makes them a talking point at the counter straight away.
